Zamfara State Governor Urges Immediate Rescue of Schoolgirls

The abduction of over 300 schoolgirls by a hundred men has raised concerns over the Zamfara state and the country. On Sunday, a delegation from President Buhari’s office visited the region, following the need to act swiftly on the matter. During the tour, the officials expressed their concern over the girls’ mysterious abduction and promised to take action.

State Officials Call on Quick Action

Hadi Sirika, Nigeria’s aviation minister and chairman of the delegation, spoke on behalf of the President. He reported that President Buhari was aware and saddened by the events that led to the girls’ abduction at Jangebe. He criticized the acts and assured the locals that the children would soon reunite with their families.

Bello Matawale, the Governor of Zamfara, also pledged to his state members to take immediate actions to salvage the schoolgirls. He also stressed the urgency of the matter and assured that all would be well in no time.

“For what happened in Jangebe, as mentioned, we are not going to say much about what happened or going on blame games. All we need now is for the same return of the children.”

What Happened on the Day of the Attack?

Sources reported that it was on Friday morning when over a hundred gunmen dressed in military uniforms invaded a boarding school in the village of Zamfara. After ambushing the school, the armed men rushed to the students’ hotels, where they forcefully abducted the girls. Though a few managed to escape the wrath of the kidnappers, the majority were victims.

Reactions Concerning the Incident

When the villagers were alarmed about the incident, worry and fear had rented the air. Humaira Mustapha, mother of two abduction victims, Hafsa and Aisha, cannot stop thinking about her girls. While talking to the AFP news agency, Mrs. Humaira narrates how sorrowful she feels when she thinks about her daughters.

“Whenever I think about my daughters, I am filled with indescribable grief. Whenever I serve food to their younger sister, tears keep flowing from my eyes because I keep thinking about the hunger and thirst they are going through, ” Mustapha told AFP news agency, making no effort to wipe away the tears rolling down her cheeks.

Mrs. Mustapha appealed to the Nigerian Government to do everything to rescue their daughters from the rebels’ hands, as they were in real danger of either being raped, harmed, or even killed. Nevertheless, the incident has equally affected the students who survived the attack. Aliyu Ladan Jangebe says that his five daughters aged between 12 and 16 were in the school when the rebels stormed in.

Mr. Ladan says that the rebels took out of his four daughters while one escaped after hiding in the school bathroom. The incident is a complete mystery, considering out of five kids, he only sees one. And his other daughter now fears going to school, considering the incident traumatized her.

Masauda, one of the schoolgirls who managed to escape, also narrates her narrow escape after come across one of the rebels. She says hiding under her school bed saved her life. Though she is scared of going back to school until the Government ensures they are safe. A resident in the village also stated that the armed men attacked a military base and checkpoint before Preceding to the school to prevent the soldiers from responding to the mass abduction.
