Several Killed as Libya’s GNA forces approach Haftar stronghold

Libya has since 2011 involved in a civil war with two powers between the government and the rebels. Recently, the war seems to be intense, where Libya’s government has announced that its military forces have attacked the eastern-based renegade military commander Haftar Khalifa, killing his eight loyal fighters.

The statement by Mohamed Gnunu, a military spokesman, has come as after the forces allied with the United Nations Government of National Accord fortify their offensive against Haftar’s military bases in western Libya.

The war crisis in Libya

The Government National Accord recently recaptured several major cities in the west of Tripoli. Including Surman, Sabratha, and al-Ajaylat from the rebels.

Libya has ever been in wars after the longest-serving leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was killed in 2011 in a NATO-backed battle. Since then, the country has divided into two rival administrations. The Tripoli-based GNA, led by the Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and on the other side. The House of Representatives allied to Haftar and his self –made Libyan National Army.

In April 2019 past attack, Haftar staged a military campaign to take control of Tripoli. But failed as the counter-attack by forces loyal to the GNA was massively installed.

Attacks in Haftar’s stronghold

The Military spokesman, Gnunu, said that GNA on Saturday on a recent attacked a camp in the area of al-Hawatim near the city of Tarhouna. They captured several war vehicles and arresting 12 fighters from Haftar’s Libyan National Army.

A reporter based in Tripoli says. “The latest war activities are threatening the existence of Haftar’s forces in the whole western Libya.”

“The city of Tarhouna is a major stronghold of Haftar after they lost the city of Gharyan last June. It’s important to note that the central command of Haftar’s forces is now located in Tarhouna. And it is from there that the Egyptians, Emirati and Russian military experts are running Haftar’s offensive against Tripoli.”

The UN intervention

In the bid to stop the wars in the country. The UN and other nine countries on March 17 called on Libya’s battling sides to halt the hostilities in the country. At this time that the world is battling coronavirus pandemic. The health authorities need a safe environment and support to help fight the virus.

So far the numerous UN intervention to stop the war has failed to result in a treaty. And have been on hold since envoy Ghassan Salame resign his post in early March, citing health reasons.
