Most Nigerians remember Prophet Daniel Abodunrin for his miracle mission, which later led to his downfall. It all started in 1991 when tourists from far and wide came to the University of Ibadan’s zoological garden to have fun and see a diverse range of species, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. The Nigerian prophet was also there, but for a different reason: to bring God’s word to the test.

The Nigerian Prophet test

Prophet Daniel had come to the zoo to reenact the biblical tale of his namesake Daniel, who was thrown into the lions’ den and survived. According to the biblical account, God sent down angels to seal the lions’ throats.

According to historical records, the red-robed Prophet Daniel approached staff at the zoo on that fateful day and requested permission to enter the lions’ cage to allegedly show signs and wonders declaring that the God whom the Biblical Daniel served remains.

Some sources reported that Daniel had sneaked into the cage after his request was refused, while others said that after much pleading and persuasion, he was granted entry.

People on the scene were surprised when the prophet entered the walled area where the lions were, carrying a bible under his armpit. They also tried to convince him to abandon his mission. Others, on the other hand, stood there anticipating a miracle.

According to accounts, Prophet Abodurin stormed the cage with such vigor and zeal, reciting bible verses, speaking in tongues, and pleading with the “God of Daniel” to perform miracles.

The Backlash

The lions, much to the surprise of many, returned to their enclosure, even though this is thought to be normal behavior for wild animals. The lions pounced on the prophet as he stepped closer to them, attacking him as he threw away his Bible.

As the animals feasted on his remains, his robe and Bible were said to be drenched in blood. Many people blamed him for his bizarre act shortly after his death. Nevertheless, some Christian supporters of Daniel argued that the lions were possessed with evil spirits hence needed to be slaughtered.

Despite the incident that might have transpired while Daniel attempted to perform a miracle, Christians believe that God is still a God of wonders, the greatest. And for that reason, His believers continue to serve and honor him. We also learn that having faith while serving the Lord is one of the virtues we need to possess.
