Dancehall great Buju Banton yesterday (Oct. 2) uploaded two short videos on Instagram in which he advocates for Jamaicans to stop wearing masks. He made the call as he said the masks were infringing on citizens’ rights to be free. Many of his fans believed that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the various health and safety protocols to combat it caused the frustrated outburst from the Not an Easy Road singer.

Buju has been having a wonderful 2020 celebrating a Gold Record for his album Til’ Shiloh and the recent success of his latest album, Upside Down 2020.

He called on the people of Jamaica to stop wearing masks and insinuated that whoever dies from the virus shouldn’t matter and that the rest of the people should soldier on.

“We wan done wid dis mask wearing bullsh-t inna Jamaica. Who fi dead ago dead and who nah go dead, haffi jus live. We tired of you intellectual fools trying to tell us how to live our lives, you are so smart why you haven’t found the cure for cancer,” he declared in the first of three Instagram videos uploaded today, October 21 which he captioned “Free My People Now”.

He also posted these comments:

“Any of u the ever question who controls the media in Jamaica and who control them?! Nooo u too busy,” and in another comment, he added: “We are going to star having regular conversations.”

“My people listen Please its all planned all thought out but thankfully its was intercepted only there agents are pushing the fear to push there agenda i know a lot of u have swallowed the whole pill may GOD help us.”

The Jamaican Authorities are to Blame

He condemned the authorities for the economic downfall. He said that they were responsible for the poverty in Jamaica right now, adding that these same authorities could not find the cure for cancer and did not help the hundreds of people who have been laid off since the beginning of the pandemic. “Free my people!” he shouted.

In another video post, he said that people are being led astray by the authorities, adding that the virus seemed to be more intelligent than man and knew how to mutate.

“They taught you to love Micheal Jackson, then they teach you to hate Bill Cosby,” he said. He again urges Jamaicans to wake up and also accused them of selling votes. Again fans seemed divided and this post was endorsed by well-known comedian Majah Hype, who commented: “This applies to the world ✊🏾.”

Reactions

The comment section in response to the post was divided, with some fans urging him to wear his mask while many others agreed with his sentiments that it’s time to stop wearing masks and regain public freedom.

This fan didn’t agree with him: “Sorry Buju but this is a NO go because it is appearing that you have a problem with the economic impact of this pandemic instead of the Heath aspect of it killing our people hence, aligning you with the folks that don’t love brown people‼️ Tighten up sir. ❤️ You same way though.”

This is a bit of turnaround for Buju Banton, who in March was not even inclined to hug his daughter, Abihail Myrie, because he said she was interacting with too many outside people. It seems that he’s made a 360. To date, Jamaica has over 8000 cases of the virus and 174 deaths.
