On Sunday, a Somalia hotel attack shook the nation as nine casualties are reported dead. Among them are four of the attackers. Additionally, more than 10 people are nursing injuries from the attack. In this attack, the top suspects remain the Islamists insurgents, al Shabaab, who currently camp in the country. The attack, launched through a suicide car bomb, took place in Hotel Afrik, located in the country`s capital Mogadishu. Following the bomb was a shootout from the group, beginning a battle between the terror and Somalia police forces. Until the early morning of Monday, the battle between the al Shabaab militants and the police cooled off.
Events leading to the Somali hotel attack
Following the ongoing events between the country`s politicians, the group must have seen this as an opportunity. Moreover, the news of 700 US military withdrawing from Somali operations last month must have motivated the group. Some Somali politicians affirm that the US military’s pullout under the former president`s governance poses a weakness in fighting the group. Seeing this gap, the group fearlessly attacked the city, knowing that it is most protected from attacks like this. The attack robbed Somali of its military general Mohammed Nur Galal. Somali Prime minister condemns the attack terming it as barbaric. Mohamed Hussein Roble further affirms that Galal`s death will not hinder them from honoring his 50 years of service to Somalia’s defense ministry.
The US responds to help in the Somalia attack.
The Danaab Somali military forces, with help from the US troops, joined to help end the attack. Danaab holds the most skilled military personnel in handling high-level al Shabaab targets. The fact that the group attempted to attack the capital city took special planning. The Danaab thus took the necessary measures to counter the group. The US offered considerable air support together with medical evacuations.
Al Shabaab Somali Attacks
Dating back to 2008, the group has posed a threat to the country in the hopes of overpowering the current governance. Moreover, the attacks trickle down to any other country, offering the government support to stop them. The Islamists group hunger to establish their rule in the state under the governance of an oppressive wrong interpretation of the Islamic Law.
Political unrests a threat to Somali safety
The group is also targeting to disrupt the national elections in December. However, due to political wrangles between the Somali politicians, there have been election delays. The delay also extends to disrupt the lawmakers’ agenda to pick their president, scheduled to be on February 8th. Due to the ongoing political unrest, Somalia’s security draws more attention to forgetting the al Shabaab.
