The African Union (AU) suspends Guinea after Coup. Guinea was a founding member of the Africa Union, an organization aimed at achieving political integration and promoting human rights in Africa.

The African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security Council announced in a tweet that the council suspended the Republic of Guinea from all Africa Union activities/decision-making bodies.

The Union requested that Moussa Faki’s chief commission “engage with stakeholders in the region” on the issue.

This incident comes after Colonel Mamady Doumbouya of the Military Junta took over the country following the arrest of Alpha Conde, the president who was accused of being corrupt. To seize state assets, the military Junta and Guinea’s military leaders suspended the constitution, closed the country’s borders, and froze government bank accounts.

Guinea has not only been suspended by the African Union since the coup, but the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has also suspended it.

Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister, Alpha Barry, announced the suspension following a virtual meeting of all fifteen members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

ECOWAS urged Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, calling for an immediate return to constitutional order in the country’s capital before meeting with the military leader. It also intends to send a high-level delegation to Guinea to mediate the situation.

Following the visit of an ECOWAS delegation on Friday, ECOWAS commission President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou stated he had seen Alpha Conde and that the former president was in good health.

Alpha Conde became Guinea’s first democratically elected president in 2010, and he was re-elected in 2015. However, chaos reigned when his election victory was called into question after he changed the country’s constitution, sparking protests that resulted in the deaths of several people in October.

In Colonel Mamady Doumbouya’s statement, he declared, “A soldier has to save the country. We will no longer entrust politics to one man. We will put it in the hands of the people, and the constitution invalidated and closed the country’s borders after deposing Alpha Conde.”

Several leaders, including Conde and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who condemned and criticized the military junta’s harsh rule and called for Alpha Conde’s immediate release, have condemned the military junta’s actions.
