Russia and Turkey Takes the Lead to Offer a Solution to the Libya Crisis
Libya

For a long time, Libya has been facing political turmoil. The question is, can Russia and Turkey provide a solution for the ongoing fights. Analyst’s reports say that the recent Russia jets deployment is a preparation by Moscow to reveal its place ahead of talks. Consequently, Libya hopes this is the process to carve out influence for the North African country.

Ativists in Libya

Besides, the two nation’s foreign ministers talked in a telephone call late May. They urged activists in Libya to stop fighting and get back to the negotiation table. Indeed, this might be the beginning of a renewal plan to resolve the ongoing conflicts.

Can the two nations reverse the tide?

For some observers in Libya, the bold move signals Moscow intention to set up its support for Haftar. However, Samuel Ramani says the actions aim at restoring Russia position ahead of peace discussion. According to Ramani, this isn’t a sign of compliance to engage in military interventions in Libya. He also notes that Moscow privately agreed that Haftar is doubtful to reverse the Turkish offensive tide.

In his statement, Mr. Ramani says the link between Russia hopes and MiG-29 aircraft deployment is apparent compared to Moscow’s past week speech. Likewise, he notes that when the US reported Russia’s arrival in Libya, Russia’s foreign minister spoke with Aguila Saleh. Sergey Lavrov and Aguila discussed about a political solution for the crisis. To this end, Saleh announced his initiative for Libya, which includes talks with the West and against Haftar’s plan.

Battlefield success

Sure, this isn’t the first time for Turkey and Russia to mediate in Libya’s disputes for a ceasefire. In January, Fayez al-Sarraj and Haftar visited Moscow, aiming to secure an end of hostility in the country. However, Haftar got a boost from his troop’s battlefield success.  He refused to sign the treaty and left the Russian capital. A week later, Germany hosted a separate meeting to reflect on the crisis.

A dozen countries attended the Berlin conference, with at least half of the nations supplying Libya’s warring parties.  Now, they have to make it right after violating the 2011 UN arms ban.  Indeed, there is a need to secure a pledge via foreign actors to prevent further supplies. Besides, Washington big allies backing Haftar, side with Russia at least for the short-term.

Turkey compromises.

Now, tough decisions await Turkey as they figure out the next move. Besides, Ankara allies in Tripoli base say they won’t entertain the idea of negotiating with Haftar. There is no guarantee for Haftar leader survival after rallying troops to overtake Tripoli. Besides, some of the domestic bases now show recovery signs.

However, reports show that Cairo and Abu Dhabi regions need to be free. Turkish Semih Idiz says that the vast area indicates the doubt for turkey to pursue a martial plan. If Haftar base doesn’t break, then there is nothing Turkey can do to cease future disputes. Besides, Turkey efforts will have gone in vain.

Conclusion

Although there are doubts in peace mediation, it’s time to hope for the best. It is painful to see how African nations fight for peace and harmony. Besides, this is the time to unite and abolish these terror groups. After all, we should build a safe environment for future generations.
