Nigeria sets up committee on U.S. travel ban

The controversial ban

Following the new travel ban by President Donald Trump on the six African countries, there has been an immediate reaction. Nigeria, for instance, considered it discriminatory and even accused the USA of poking their nose to other people’s affairs. However, the ban was mainly to enhance the safety of Americans. The USA president has dedicated his attention to halting immigration to his country, in the current review method. The travel ban will take action on 22 of February. Averting issuing of visas to the passport holders of the respective countries. We consider the blacklisted countries to inhabit most Muslims, and following hostility between the USA and Arabs, they fall victim.

Urge to maintain a productive relationship

Despite Nigeria’s immediate reaction, the country treasures its relations with the USA. It is ready to persuade its government to continue with its previous affairs. Nigeria’s president Buhari established a committee to examine the reasons behind President Trump’s travel ban on Nigeria. Femi Adesina, the president’s spokesman, stated the committee would work jointly with the USA government to suppress the ban on Nigeria. The committee will be steered by Rauf Aregbeula, who is the minister of interior.

It will also involve iNTERPOL and some stakeholders will also in the negotiation as they will form part of the team. The reasons behind founding the committee are to attempt exclusion of Nigeria from the ban before 22 of February. The Nigerian government is geared up to work with the USA and very committed to their relationship.

They formed The committee to ensure the proper execution of the updates. This is because when the ban takes effect, it would significantly impact the victim countries. The ban on Nigeria is against issuing immigrant visas to Nigerians with passports while the suspension excludes tourism, scholarly travels, and commercial operations.

Reason for the ban

The USA Department of Homeland Security states that the reasons behind the ban on those foreign countries were because of the current security measures they plan to put in action. They said following the review and method in place, and they want to determine the foreign countries comply with their updates.

“These countries, mostly, want to be helpful but for a variety of different reasons failed to meet those minimum requirements that we laid out,” acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf told reporters on Friday.

This is to enhance their internal security. Mostly because of the previously witnessed terror attacks after affirmations that the stated countries’ immigrants failed to provide enough information on them. Hence to enhance security, they expected to meet the security requirements to enter the states.

Nigeria stated that they received no caution from the USA government but received a direct ban. Despite not taking the ban lightly, the African country with a high number of populations sticks to maintaining a healthy relationship with the USA. They tend to do this with other international associates more so on matters relating to global security.

Rules following the ban

The controversial ban claimed vital by the president to the citizens of America was to protect them. The proclamation aimed at suspending visas that would grant a permanent stay for immigrants from Nigeria, Eritrea, etc. Diversity visas were no more eligible for nationalities from Tanzania and Sudan. They considered countries with low immigration counts to the U.S. Softly though, the nationalities from the stated countries may visit America as tourists.
