Four men are under arrest following merciless killings of lions in Uganda`s largest national park. Uganda wildlife officials affirm that the four men are currently under detention. Queen Elizabeth national park geographically positions itself near the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is at the Ishasha sector of this park that six remains of lions were found. The heads and legs of these lions were completely dismembered from the body. According to the officials, the Lions consumed poison which is believed to be from the four culprits. The inhumanity subjected to the animals calls for accountability from the four men.
Killings of lions in Uganda
The Uganda Wildlife Authority further affirms that the four showcased their crime scene. Four more lion heads were found following the disclosure from them. Additionally, fifteen legs confirmed to be from lions were found hidden under one of the legs. It raises suspicions of how many lions could have died at the hands of these men before the arrest of these men.
Wildlife Trafficking in Uganda
Wildlife officials from Uganda affirm that they have been undertaking wildlife trafficking activities for a while now. Moreover, this act has become a menace to the Uganda wildlife. As a result, any crimes related to wildlife abuse are equivalent to a life imprisonment punishment from the law. This will act as a deterrence to anyone who will think of violating the rights of wildlife in Uganda.
Possible reason for Killings of lions
According to the World Animal Protection WAP, the killings could be due to the demand for lion bones in Asia. WAP is an animal charity organization in London. WAP also reveals previous acts of wildlife abuse from China, Vietnam, and again Asia. According to the WAP, there was a time Tiger bones were in high demand in these three regions for traditional medicinal purposes. However, due to the 1993 ban on Tiger bones, the alternative lion bones increased in demand.
