The novel coronavirus is the causative agent of COVID-19. Coronavirus is the current world’s problem that every single world leader is striving to mitigate its effects. Cases of coronavirus in western countries are rapidly increasing in every 24 hours. However, in Africa, home to over a billion people is experiencing a slow growth rate of the coronavirus. Reports confirm that there are over 100000 cases of coronavirus and over 3000 fatalities.
Coronavirus Updates In Ghana As Of April
COVID-19 has affected Ghana the second most after South Africa. During mid-April, the number of cases of coronavirus rapidly rose above the 500 mark because of the mixture of government measures. There were also few recoveries in the country compared to its neighboring state that had hundreds of recoveries.
A few days later after an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, Ghana did what most African countries did not. The country lifted its lockdown measure despite having more than 1000 cases of the virus. However, the government stressed out that they will impose a lockdown on cities that were hotspots if need be.
After the president lifted the lockdown in the cities of the country, officials met for further discussions on the issue. They agreed that since the lockdown was over, every citizen needed to wear face masks. Local authorities were to inform traders on the importance of wearing masks and drivers were not to allow passengers in public vehicles without masks. A rather draconian measure on masks was that authorities and local heads were to post signs on public places emphasizing the importance of face masks.
Covid-19 In Ghana As Of May
During the start of this month, data reports say that Ghana had over 2000 cases of coronavirus, over 15 fatalities, and almost 215 recoveries. This puts the country at the forefront of coronavirus cases in the West African region. Moreover, the country is in the second position in the sub-Saharan region but behind South Africa, which has most cases. On 2nd May, the cases rose to over 2150 as recoveries reach to about 230.
A week later, the Ghana Police Service told the country’s media that it started testing all the workers for coronavirus. Initially, the medical expert tested over 30000 workers who had lockdown duties in hotspot areas. Sheila Abayie-Buckman, director of Public Affairs, said that some officers had the coronavirus.
Observing the social distancing rules, the coronavirus affected the education system of Ghana just like other countries. Students were to catch up with online studies hence the education officials revised the timetable. The pre-school and lower primary were to only have English and Mathematics lesson. Upper primary was to have lessons in English, Mathematics, and Science. Junior High Schools starting from level 1 were to have lessons in Mathematics, Science, English, and Social Studies. The classes were to be on DStv 315, Gotv 150, and StarTimes.
