This week, the Somalian national army announced that they had killed more than 61 Al-Shabaab militants and foreign nationals. In the report, the Somalian military revealed that they had attacked a warehouse the militants were hiding in. The warehouse was located at Ala-Futoe village, some 285 kilometers from the capital, Mogadishu.
As the militants hid in the warehouse, the Somalian army set off explosives inside the house killing all the Al-Shabaab militants. The blast also set of the materials the fighters had stored inside the 11-room house.
Amongst the militants killed were some Al-Shabaab bomb experts. After the army bombed the warehouse, they conducted a swipe of the area and identified some bodies. During the operation, the Somalian army also managed to destroy Al-Shabaab equipment they used to carry out attacks.

The Al-Shabaab

The Al-Shabaab group has carried out many attacks in Somalia in an attempt to overthrow Somalia’s internationally-backed government. As a result, numerous nations have teamed up with the Somalian government’s army to try and get rid of them. But over the years the group has proved to be a bigger and stronger threat than expected. The Al-Shabaab have abandoned many of their strongholds in Somalia due to attacks from foreign armies. However, the group still controls vast rural areas in Somalia, enabling them to maintain a presence in urban centers through an extensive intelligence network.
The Al-Shabaab still remain unstoppable in Somalia. Due to this, many experts on the situation in Somalia expected that the killing of 61 fighters would be met with retaliation.

Somalian military site attacked by suicide bomber

Just one day after the announcement of the successful operation at the warehouse, the Al-Shabaab group launched yet another attack. According to police in Somalia, at least 15 people were killed and more than 20 others wounded. Most of those killed were recruits who were lined up outside an army camp in Somalia’s capital.
The Al-Shabaab sent in a suicide bomber to the military training center in the capital, Mogadishu. The training center was overcrowded with new recruits and soldiers. The bomber, wearing the explosives-packed vest, impersonated a trainee to enter the camp in Mogadishu’s Medina district.
Later on, the Al-Shabaab bomber set off the explosives in the overcrowded training center. Those on-site rushed all of those killed and wounded to the Medina hospital. Health officials at the hospital confirmed that at least 14 people received serious injuries at the checkpoint outside the General Degaban military training camp in Mogadishu.

Somalian government remains silent

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Medina hospital searching for their missing relatives. The Al-Shabaab group hours later announced on Al-Shabaab radio Al Andalus that they had carried out the attack.
The Somalian government is yet to make any report concerning the happenings at the training center. Many families who lost their loved ones remain shocked by the events of the day. Numerous others believe that the government is hiding other casualties.
