Armando Manzanero Died After Battling Covid-19

Armando Manzanero died on Monday, December 28th, 2020. The legendary Mexican singer-songwriter who composed songs including the standard “It’s Impossible” died of complications due to Covid-19. He was 85.

According to El Universal of Mexico, he tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday 17th December. Five days later, doctors inserted a tube into his body for ventilation. He was stable until Sunday night.

Prestigious Awards

Armando Manzanero is known for composing many songs. Many of these were translated into English. This includes “Somos Novios,” which was recorded in English as “It’s Impossible.” Perry Como and Elvis Presley recorded it. His works include classics such as “Adoro” and “Esta tarde vi llover”

He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Grammys. He was recently honored at the Billboard Music Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mexican President Lopez Obrador praised the Yucatan native. He labeled him a great composer and the country’s best. The president noted, “He was a man with sensitivity. He handled social questions very well.”

 

As a matter of fact, the president played a video clip of Manzanero singing “Adoro.” He was so overwhelmed by emotions that he had to cut short his daily press conference.

Contributions to Latin American Music

Gabriel Abaroa Jr., the Latin Recording Academy president, released a press statement after hearing the news that Armando Manzanero died. In the statement, he eulogized the legendary singer for his contributions to music in Latin America and the world.

Armando Manzanero is one of the world’s most prominent and acclaimed music composers from Latin America. He began his career at age 15. He began with over 400 original works composed over a period that spanned more than seven decades.

His music crossed languages, genres, and generations. They have been performed by many artists, including Perry Como, Elis Regina, and Elvis Prestley.

“His passing is a huge loss for the music world. Our prayers are with the family and the Mexican Society of Songwriters and all of Mexico.” Said Gabriel Abaroa.

 

Legacy

 

Manzanero won a Grammy nomination in 1971 for Song of the Year for co-writing the song “It’s Impossible.” The song was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

He served as the president of Mexico’s Society of Authors and Composers (SACM) until 2011.

“He was one of the most gifted artists of our time. He made beautiful music that transcended borders.” Stated a Twitter post by the Mexico Musical body.

Over the span of his career of about seven decades, Manzanero composed over 600 songs. These are songs like “Nunca en el mundo,” “Te Extraño,” and “Contigo Aprendí.” They were famously played in many ballrooms and on many elite occasions.

The song “Contigo Aprendi” was one of four songs Luis Miguel recorded as part of an album co-produced by Manzanero. The album was called 1997’s Romances.

Moreover, many musicians took to social media to honor the songwriter. Marc Anthony wrote:

“The legend left us today. A person with enormous talent. A man who has inspired many of us with his music. I am grateful for the blessing of his legacy.”

Paulina Rubio made a video with the caption:

“One of Latin America and of the world’s greatest. Your passing hurts us. We’re so blessed to have your melodious songs. Sending a big hug to his family.”
