The region of Warrap state in South Sudan flooded because of heavy rains and the overflow of the river in the area. Warrap state is well known for being the birthplace of Salva Kiir and training grounds for the unified forces. The floods displaced several people from their homes and suspension of training camps.
And the humanitarian affairs and disaster minister Peter Mayen Majongdit stated that Salva Kiir’s residence in the area was also affected by the heavy downpour. According to the minister, water from the surge continued to occupy the house, displacing animals and people who lived on the first family’s property.
He stated, “floods are becoming a national issue. We are getting reports from all the corners of the country and the reports we are getting now shows that more than half of the country is submerged by water even the house of his Excellency, the president of the republic at his home village has been taken over by water which continues to occupy it.”
South Sudan’s information minister, Micheal Makuei, told reporters that water had submerged the unified forces training centers in the Upper Nile state. He also asked the deputy minister of defense to rescue the situation and find a new location to move the training centers so that training activities are not interrupted.
President Salva Kiir told a woman caucus of his ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) that his home village had been flooded because of heavy rains in the country.
South Sudan President stated, “Now this year it has rained heavily, and floods have destroyed the entire country. Even the place where I was born is now in the water.” All of us here let us think of how to come out of this crisis. Let’s leave the fighting and leave anything and let us work together so that we get out of the problem we face.”
The president also urged the people to stop fighting and start paying attention to issues that affect people in the country and women to design a strategy. He stated, “If we can bring our brothers, we will talk like the sitting here today, not that there will fight and it is because of a conflict that our country remained undeveloped.”
