Spanish and Moroccan Police Collaborate to Bust Helicopter Drug Gang
Spanish police have announced the dismantling of a criminal gang specializing in nocturnal helicopter flights to smuggle hashish from Morocco. The Guardia Civil revealed that, in collaboration with Moroccan authorities, they intercepted two helicopters and nearly 800 kilograms of hashish, a derivative of the cannabis plant, in a coordinated operation.
During the operation, which occurred in January, law enforcement officers apprehended nine individuals, including two individuals described as having expertise in nighttime flying. The arrests were made following a raid on a ranch near Cadiz, Spain, triggered by surveillance that detected a helicopter making a brief journey to Morocco and returning.
Tragically, one of the gang’s leaders lost his life in a car accident while attempting to flee the scene of the operation. The bust represents a significant blow to the drug trafficking network’s operations, disrupting their illicit activities and preventing a substantial quantity of hashish from reaching the market.
The seizure of the helicopters and the substantial quantity of hashish underscores the scale of the criminal enterprise and the sophisticated methods employed by the gang to facilitate their illicit trade.
