Following the anxiety, Sony finally announced details on the awaited PS5 specifications. This was during a briefing by Sony’s play station hardware lead, Mark Cerny. According to Cerny, the current play station relies on three main principles. Which include; listening to developers, balancing evolution and revolution, and finding new dreams. Especially since consoles generation arrives with substantially new capabilities. Starting with play station four, which took a different path.
Listening to developers.
It is a crucial principle. It promotes the desire of developers to drive the need for new hardware. A lot of what they put in the consoles relies on the desires of developers. This is because game players need to play fantastic games, and so game creators’ aspirations matter. They usually gather information from about two dozen publishers.
Balancing evolution and revolution.
With play stations, 1,2,3 revolution was vital. Each time they included brand new features in the hardware. Therefore, judging the value of each feature added and why it is worthy. For play station 5, GPU was the area with much tension. Hence to strike the right balance between performance and development, they put SSD in the hardware.
Finding new dreams.
It involves basing ideas from different points of view. For instance, not only increasing CPU performance and GPU performance. The new ideas include increasing graphic performance, exploring SSD, and also coming up with a custom engine for audio, i.e., 3D audio.
Why will the SSD make a big difference in play station 5
The presence of the SSD in the play station five hard drives is a great step in the game world. They describe the SSD as a game-changer. Resulting in fast load time compared to HDD. For instance, PS5 loads data worth 5GB in a second. While PS4 loads 50_100MB in one second. The SSD loads 2GB of data in 0.27 seconds, while HDD in PS4 loads 1GB data in 20 seconds. The result is SSD can stream game assets of games. Instead of relying on different strategies by developers to load parts of the game one at a time by reusing graphics continuously.
SSD is more durable than HDDs. This is because they can withstand harsh conditions. Especially since they lack movable parts. As such, they can withstand high temperatures, shocks, vibrations, and even accidental drops.
It is small, doesn’t produce noise, and generates less energy. Hence little energy required to run devices with SSD.
SSD also stores lost memory (RAM) i.e., flash memory like the one found in SSD will enable data to persist even after shutting down a computer.
What are the SP5 hardware specifications?
According to Cerny, “The PS5 will feature a custom eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.5GHz (variable frequency). A custom GPU based on AMD’s rDNA 2 architecture hardware that promises 10.28 teraflops and 36 computer units clocked at 2.23GHz (also variable frequency). It’ll also have 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, and a custom 825GB SSD that Sony has previously promised will offer super-fast loading times in gameplay, via Eurogames.”
It will have support for 4K blue ray and USB. To access the games, one will need to install it to the internal SSD. The Internal SSD should meet the Sony standard of 5.5GB/sec to be effective.
In Sony’s console, the CPU and GPU will run at varying frequencies depending on the demand of GPU and CPU. Hence no down locking when demanding games arrive.
