The secretary-general of INTERPOL cautioned online buyers that criminals were deceiving and conning people. Especially due to the pandemic, they were taking advantage of vulnerable persons who feared for their lives.

The criminals were impersonating legit companies through using their websites, email addresses and names. Sometimes, they instruct buyers to provide their health and payment credentials while using fake emails of global health authorities.

And they also send attachments corrupted with malware. INTERPOL says it has received complaints from thousands of people. Hence it is assisting in solving close to over 30coronavirus frauds through freezing suspected bank accounts. It also cautioned people to ensure they are working with legit dealers before making transactions.

For instance, they are working on a fraud scheme they realized because of a compromised email. The email address was linked to a legit company in Spain dealing face masks.

They realized the site was fake and started tracing the funds from multiple buyers. The fraudsters received 880000 Euros from German buyers then transferred it to suspected Dutch suppliers. The supplier transferred 500000 euros to the Netherlands then the UK then finally Nigeria.

The person receiving the funds remains anonymous. Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crime Commission has not commented on the issue.
