In the CAF Champions League semi-finals, Kaizer Chiefs will face Wydad Casablanca, with the two teams that had met earlier this season in the group round. In the quarter-final second-leg match in Dar es Salaam on Saturday afternoon, the South African giants were defeated 3-0 by the Tanzanian champions, Simba.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, made it to the final four for the first time in their history after winning the tie 4-3 on aggregate. This comes following a 4-0 victory in the first-leg match at home last weekend.
Amakhosi will face a Wydad team that advanced to the semi-finals after overcoming MC Alger of Algeria 2-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals. Last weekend, Alger held Wydad to a 1-1 draw in the first-leg encounter in Algiers, but Walid El Karti’s late goal gave Wydad a 1-0 triumph in the return leg match in Casablanca on Saturday night.
Wydad thrashed the Chiefs 4-0 at home in a Group C match in February 2021, but the Amakhosi got their revenge in the reverse tie last month, winning 1-0 in Johannesburg. Stuart Baxter was reappointed as manager of the Chiefs earlier this month for a second time. They’ll be hoping that Baxter can help them avenge their 4-0 loss to Wydad in the group stage.
“It’s possible that we didn’t perform to the level that was expected of us. However, I believe that being in the semi-finals is sufficient proof that we put in some effort,” according to Zwane, Kaizer Chiefs’ assistant coach.
Meanwhile, Wydad also claimed that they would defend their title regardless.
“The identical match that we played in the group stage and won 4-0 will be played tomorrow. It’s the semi-finals, and all of the semi-finalists are formidable opponents.” Salaheddine Saidi, a WAC midfielder, agreed.
