The coronavirus pandemic is affecting many business, and sex workers business is experiencing the same. Social distancing is the new norm that has cost them a lot of customers. The virus is spread by contact from person to person through handshaking with someone infected with the virus. And respiratory droplets when a person who is infected sneezes or coughs. Practically, I would be scared to death to pay for services at the brothels or in public for sex at this type of moment. People must stay at home. And as a result, the sex workers business is collapsing as they don’t get customers like in the past days.

The virus can get access to the body when you touch your face. This is the reason why people should wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

Commercial sex workers complain

Commercial sex workers in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, now luck alternative of making money as coronavirus records still escalate in the country. Because of this, they are now forced to call their usual customers at lower prices to get something to take back home–showing how badly the virus has affected their market.

They say that the pandemic is bringing fear to their customers and scaring potential customers from wanting their services for fear of getting the virus through touching of the body. Still, to them, the coronavirus is not the only disease that puts their lives at high risk, and therefore they are not afraid of it at all.

The case of COVID-19 in Ghana

The country’s government authorities have put a total ban on all social gatherings, shaking of hands, coming close into body contacts, a social distance of six meters among others, and other practical mechanisms of stopping the spread of COVID-19 that has hit the country.

Ghana has so far recorded 52 cases of the virus disease, recording two deaths, on the March 24th 20202. As a result, the country though Ghana Health Service GHS is asking the citizens to follow the strict rules and adhere to the measures to help contain the virus. This can be achieved through constant washing of your hands, staying at home, and sanitizing handing most often!

 

Ghana’s Otec News reporter, Isaac Nsiah Foster, visited the sex workers at their main points, Adum, Dichemso, Ahodwo roundabout, Asafo Market and Africa. He says the hot business zones were not as busy as when the virus had not hit the country. This is a total reduction in the number of customers they get daily.

 

“Though I am afraid of the disease, I have to confront it as it’s my source of income. I used to entertain ten customers a day. But with the coming of the coronavirus, only two customers have patronized me in four days, even at reduced prices,”

one of the commercial workers said.

Another ‘Queen of the Night’ as they prefer to be called says:

“Life has become hard. Since last week, I have not even slept with one customer. How am I going to pay for my rent and other bills? I am afraid of the COVID-19, but there are other diseases that kill. I pray that the disease is controlled as early as possible to reverse business to normalcy.”

Conclusion

This tells how bad their days are and total hard times what coronavirus is making them go through. While all that is happening, the virus is continuing to advance. And day by day, more cases are being recorded in the country and globally!
