Ugandan presidential aspirant Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has called to a halt his campaigns after a clash with the police that left several members of his campaign team injured. The Tuesday incident has continued to stir up tension among Bobi Wine’s Supporters.

This comes after Bobi had earlier vowed that he and his supporter “will not be broken” in their fight for a “better Uganda”

The Clash

Bobi announced on his Twitter account that they had been “attacked” by police and military in Kayunga, East of Kampala. He went on to say that several members of his team had been injured, including his producer Dan Magic, and ASP Kato, a police officer attached to him by the Electoral Commission. Rubber bullets had also shattered his vehicle’s windscreen. He concluded by urging his followers to pray for Uganda.

Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) spokesman, Joel Senyonyi said Daniel Oyerwot (Dan Magic), was hit by a rubber bullet while in the car with Bobi. The hit left the producer with a torn mouth in addition to, losing some of his teeth.

An online broadcaster associated with NUP, Ghetto TV, aired Dan Maic lying on a hospital with a blood-stained bandage concealing his mouth while Bobi held his hand.

The police through their spokesman, Patrick Onyango, remarked in a statement that NUP supporters had distracted traffic and attacked security personnel, consequently leaving three, including Dan Magic injured by “teargas fragments.”

President Yoweri Museveni in an earlier statement defended the actions of the army and police, pointing out that no politician was “untouchable”.

A drop in the Ocean

This appears just to be a drop in the ocean for the predicaments yet to befall the 38-year-old, musician-turned-politician, who is determined to bring to an end Museveni’s reign which began in 1986. Museveni’s era has been characterized by constitutional reforms to ensure he remains in the top seat.

Bobi had earlier been arrested for allegedly flaunting the Covid-19 campaign, and was released on 20 November 2020 on bail. His arrest left 54 people dead after riots erupted with his supporters demanding his release.

Bobi is a threat

Without a doubt, the support that he has gained from the youth due to his reformative lyrics from his songs have startled the ruling National Resistance Movement Party.

For this reason, he has been arrested several times for different charges. This is not the first time Bobi is vying nor is it his first encounter with opposition from the Ugandan police and army.
