At least 115 fishermen are being hospitalized in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, for serious skin sores contracted while at sea.
Dr. Karamba Kaba, chief of the burns unit at Donka Hospital, adds, “It’s not a contagious disease – no way.”
On social media, we read about this mysterious sickness that has evolved,’ but people need to be reassured. It is unmistakably a chemical burn or a burn induced by contact with a caustic substance.
Anyone who reports these burns to a hospital will get free care.
A blood test is an initial stage in therapy, and experts in Conakry are now examining the data. Wounds are also cleansed in order for patients to recuperate.
Some people have had lesions on their faces, while others have had them on their stomachs or genitalia, and it is suspected that some sufferers are hesitant to seek treatment due to the shame associated with it.
Seven additional sick fishermen allegedly presented themselves to the island’s health service but refused to go to Conakry’s specialist treatment facility, which is 50 kilometers (31 miles) away.
