Eventually, Thomas Thabane agrees to resign from office after facing ultimate pressure. Besides, this comes after accusations of taking part in the 2017 ex-wife murder case. Meanwhile, it was the second term for Thabane as the prime minister of Lesotho. His coalition government fell apart a week before his resignation. Thabane says maybe his work is not complete, but it is about time to rest and take leave from public life.
Mr. Thomas is now eighty years old, ready to retire. Let’s face reality. Generally, at this age, you don’t want to run up and down, bothering about politics. Sure, this is the time to check on your family, more so grandchildren. For this reason, you have to cut the strings and be a full-term grandparent. Let’s not overlook Thabane’s situation.
Thabane pleads
Consequently, Mr Thabane pleads to the entire nation in his statement. Furthermore, he gives his successor full support at all times. According to Haru Mutasa reports, Thabane handed his resignation to King Letsie( III). Letsie is one of the top traditional leaders in the country.
Despite being suspected of taking part in ex-wife murder, Thabane and his current wife denies the charges. The ex-prime minister promised to step down in January because of his old age, but he slowed down the process. Besides, some say he did so to prepare his smooth retirement. Mr. Thomas coalition collapsed as of 11th May. For this reason, the government expected his retire by 22nd May. Now, elections plans for a new regime are underway.
Moeketsi Majoro, a finance minister, awaits to replace Thebane. Majoro plans to pass the budget and revive Lesotho’s economy with an immediate effect after swearing-in. Although Lesotho reported only one Coronavirus case, it faces a massive hit due to the global economic retardation caused by the pandemic.
Thabane Legacy amid murder case
Thomas Thabane first term as Lesotho prime minister ranged between 2012 and 2015, February. Afterward, a split in the ruling coalition regime resulted in an early general election. Similarly, the successor government led by Pakalitha Mosisili endured divisions as well. Later, Mosisili lost with a vote of no confidence, and Thomas took over again in 2017.
Thabane returned to power being the head of the ABC coalition, supported by three smaller federal parties. Later on, the same year, he lost his wife and requested mediation from the regional Southern African community. He had to seek immunity from the ongoing murder prosecution. However, Thabane leaves without any assurance of freedom.
Still, Thabane and his ex-wife were in a divorce battle during her murder. The incident occurred on the night of 14th June 2017. Besides, this happened two days before Thabane second term swearing as prime minister. His current wife, Maesaiah, also charged with involvement in the murder case but is out on bail. Sure, this is the beginning of the trial as Thabane asked the Court not to try him while at office. Of course, this means he is now free and ready for hearing.
Conclusion
To this end, no one knows the truth about the murder case. Let’s stay tuned as the case is yet to start. It is miserable to see our leader’s murderers. All in all, I hope this is not the case for Lesotho ex-prime minister.
Probably, Thomas stepping down might help to end the political crisis in the country. In my opinion, leaders should reveal role model characters and not gloomy ones. Moreover, the next generation depends on today’s actions, so let’s show them the way.
