Sheffield University Works Towards Battery Innovation for Africa
The University of Sheffield, in collaboration with Sheffield-based battery technology company Mobile Power, has developed MOPO batteries to provide longer-lasting power solutions for African communities. With over 740 million people worldwide lacking access to electricity, these batteries offer a sustainable alternative for powering essential appliances such as cooking equipment, refrigerators, and mobile phones.
According to Dan Gladwin, professor of electronic and electrical engineering at the University of Sheffield, traditional power sources like petrol and diesel generators can be expensive and environmentally harmful, especially for off-grid or unstable power networks. In contrast, intelligent batteries like MOPO offer a clean, safe, and cost-effective solution for connecting communities to electricity.
The MOPO batteries will be available for rental through a cloud-based platform rental system, making them accessible to those in need. Solar-powered charging stations will facilitate the recharging process, ensuring a sustainable energy cycle. Since 2017, engineers from the University of Sheffield have collaborated with Mobile Power to enhance the battery cells’ longevity, enabling widespread deployment across several African countries, including Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Chad, and Uganda.
These efforts reflect a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable energy solutions, particularly in regions where access to reliable electricity remains a significant challenge. By harnessing renewable energy sources like solar power and implementing innovative battery technologies, initiatives like the MOPO batteries address immediate energy needs and contribute to long-term environmental conservation and economic development.
