1. University of Cape Town

The University of Cape Town is found at the foot of the Table Mountain giving breathtaking views of the Devil’s Peak and the Cape Town city. It is the oldest university in South Africa but the second oldest in Africa, University of Sierra Leone is the oldest. Its main campus has the main library, residence hostels, teaching departments, and sports facilities among others. Academic departments consist of 5 faculties which are the built environment, including health sciences, engineering, commerce and humanities, science, and law. The University of Cape Town lobbies for social change via its transformational projects that are themed towards topics like diversity, student opportunity, and behavior. To promote interaction and integration, 19 per cent of the university’s students are international.

2. University of Witwatersrand

It’s popularly known as the University of Wits. Located at Johannesburg, this university began as a school of mining due to the abundance of gold in this location. During the 20th century the period of apartheid rule, University of Wits was significantly divided but this did not hinder most of the prominent African leaders from graduating. Its five campuses consist of the students’ residences, academic departments, and female-only dormitories. The Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre is the biggest training center for medical specialists in South Africa. The Wits Disability Unit sees to it that higher education is available to all the specially-abled people and caregivers.

3. Stellenbosch University

Stellenbosch University is located in the western cape of South Africa, just a little distance from Cape Town. This university preserves the Dutch colonial architecture and its streets contain galleries, cafes, and boutiques. This South Africa’s prestigious university has achieved tons of milestones the biggest being designing Africa’s first microsatellite in 1999. Teaching across its 4 campuses is done in both English and Afrikaans languages. The 150 academic departments, 10 faculties, an extensive library, and several research centers make this university one of the most prestigious in South Africa. It also has a conservatory center with 2 concert halls, one hosting the Stellenbosch University choir- the oldest choir in South Africa.

4. University of KwaZulu-Natal

This university was established when the University of Natal and the University of Durban-Westville merged in 2004. It is based in the KwaZulu-Natal province, with its five colleges dispersed in its five campuses. In the school, different courses are taught including law courses, engineering, arts, social sciences, humanities, and health sciences. The university has produced some of the best poets, public servants, and innovators. The research centers here ensure that the students engage in international collaborations in efforts to tackle pressing issues like HIV/AIDS, food security and high-tech developments and innovations.

5. Makerere University

Makerere University Kampala (MUK) is the biggest university in Uganda established in 1922. It first began as a technical school and has now grown to be one of the prestigious universities in Africa. The university constitutes of 9 colleges and 1 school with around 36,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 postgraduate students. Many iconic East African leaders and political figures have attended MUK. After independence, the university acted as a center for literary activities and culture, thus giving Uganda a national identity. The academic departments offer natural sciences, business and management, health sciences, education, and engineering courses. In MUK, the halls of residence are determined by the gender and one residential hall has been specially set aside for the final year medical students.
