Lulu Jemimah, The Ugandan Girl, Who ‘Married Herself’ Completes Her Masters at Oxford University

Lulu Jemimah completed her bachelor’s degree. Consequently, she joined the Master’s program at Oxford University. Her parents wanted her to get a marriage partner, despite her success. Clearly fed up with the heat, Lulu returned to Uganda and married herself in a mock ceremony.

Marriage ranks high on the life achievement list for an African child. Parents and relatives begin talking about marriage when one is still in high school. Without a doubt, this prepares a child for marriage. The strain of these initial conversations steadily increases. As one gets older, the elders give accountability, culture, and traditional lectures.

Two options existed. She was either to yield and marry, or affect a callous attitude whenever the subject comes up. Well, unless one is like Lulu Jemimah studying in Oxford.

“This is my love story,” she says on her GoFund.me page, which was ambiguously named.  whatever it takes, Lulu was committed to conquering life’s challenges. She said It will bring her joy and satisfaction.

“I applied to three universities in the UK last year but was admitted without funds,” Lulu commented. She applied again. They later accepted her into Oxford for a two-year Master’s program in Creative Writing. “I could not believe they had chosen me, up till now,” says Lulu.

Her Feminist Marriage

Jemimah lamented, “They ask what my plan is; when I plan to get married, have children and start a family.” Despite everything moving smoothly, it is not enough for African parents.

“When I turned 16, my father wrote my wedding speech. My mother prays for me each birthday. Her prayers always include a plea for a wonderful husband in recent years. she wants someone to look after me. I decided to make everyone feel comfortable, “she continued.

Upon returning to Uganda for her birthday, the incorrigible Master’s student rented a dress. She sent out wedding invitations to her loved ones. Lulu Jemimah walked through a pub to a traditional wedding march, giving a wedding toast.

Compared to a typical wedding, Jemimah’s show cost £2. Clearly, the amount was for transportation. Furthermore, her friends sponsored her wedding. She was obviously candid about her marriage decision.

Marriage is a symbol of love and devotion. However, many people in Africa agree that a woman has to marry. It is the only way to guarantee the financial safety of a woman.

“I’m more confident that I will achieve my goals out of one of two things,” she said. “The marriage gown (without a groom) or an academic graduate gown of Oxford,” she elaborated.

How Lulu Jemimah Made It to Oxford University

Jemimah faced many seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Joining and living at Oxford University was obviously not easy. She sought financial support and legal counsel keep in training. Lulu began a crowdfunding campaign in 2018. This was to raise funds for her education at Oxford. 

The family and society pressured her into marriage. Subsequently, she decided to marry herself on her 32nd birthday. This was an awkward, yet heartfelt gesture. she was having sleepless evenings.

Earlier, two prominent Ugandan leaders linked to Lulu’s tale. They planned to arrange a fake marriage. Concurrently, It was to contribute money for Lulu’s education as well.

She raised a sum of 7.7 million at her wedding. Lulu later outpaced her Shs 50 m target. In one month, via the crowdfunding platform, GoFund. me, she managed to raise £ 10,194 (Shs 50 m). The money was from well-wishers around the world. She surpassed her target by £400 (Shs 2 m).

She has now completed her Master’s Degree at Oxford University.

To celebrate her success, she went to social media. “Writing is how I make sense of the world,” says Lulu.

“Congratulations, we look forward to seeing the great things you’re going to do,” commented her fans on social media.
