Know Who is Who in the Just Concluded Mozambique Presidential Election

The Mozambique presidential election that held on Tuesday, 15th of October, 2019 witnessed a large turn out of voters in various parts of Mozambique, though certain polling centres in the country had a low turn out of voters and some observers alleged that they were restricted from discharging their duties. But voting went smoothly across the country, though some election observers reported incidents of election manipulation. President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi won the election with 3,334,571 vote count. President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi commended Mozambicans for their large turn out to vote for their preferred candidate.

Today, the result is under great contention. The Mozambique presidential election main opposition party call for the cancellation of the result with claims that the election constituted violence and fraud. He had initially warned that they would not accept the result if the results were manipulated or doctored.

Meanwhile, it is good to get familiar with the candidates and parties that participated in the just-concluded elections.

Here is a brief biography of the Presidential Candidates:

President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi

The presidential candidate of the Frelimo Party, President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi was given birth on the 9th of February, 1959 in Namsu, Mueda District, Cabo Delgado Province. He gained power in the last election in 2014, after taking over from his predecessor Former President Armando Guebuza. He led his opponent with 57% of the vote, given him a clean slate. Before his victory he had severed in various capacities, he worked with the Mozambique Ports and Railway Authority, then he became the Executive Director and eventually joined the Company’s Board of Directors in 2007, prior to his been appointed as Defense Minister form the year 2008 to 2014. His stay in office has witnessed the agreement to maintain peace which was signed by his party and that of the opposing party Renamo Party and development of a mighty gas project that would have a great impact on their economy.

Ossufo Momade

The presidential candidate for the Renamo Party, Ossufo Momade was given birth to on the 30th of January, 1961 on the Island of Mozambique, Nampula Province, Mozambique. He has also served in various capacities. In 2007, he was elected as the Secretary-General and later handed over to Manuel Bissopo to resume as the Head of the Defence and Security Department of Renamo. After the demise of the Party’s leader Afonso Dhlakama, he served as Interim Leader before he was elected as President of the Party. On the 1st of August, 2019, he signed a peace agreement with President Filipe Nyusi which prompted the Renamo fighters to surrender their weapons.

Daviz Simango

The presidential candidate for the MDM Party, Daviz Simango was given birth to on the 7th of February, 1964 in Tanganyika. He has served in various capacities. He is the son of the Vice President of Frelimo, became the Mayor Beira in 2003 and was a member of the opposition party Renamo before forming his present party MDM after he was refused candidature in 2009.

Mario Albino

The presidential candidate for the AMUSI Party, Mario Albino. He is currently the leader of the party. The AMUSI Party was formed in 2010 with some of its member decamping from MDM Party.
