Ten people were killed when gunmen attacked a family in their home in a village near the South African city of Pietermaritzburg, according to police.

The motive for the shooting has not been disclosed by authorities.

According to a statement issued by the police ministry, seven women and three men were killed.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with over 20,000 killings recorded yearly out of a total population of 60 million.

Following a succession of mass shootings throughout 2018, gunmen assaulted a birthday party in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, killing eight and injuring three.

It seems to be a heinous crime scene. Police Minister Bheki Cele said on public broadcaster SABC from Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal province, “Too many people were lost here.”

According to Cele, police leadership must decide if the province needs more police resources.

A photographer on the scene saw a mortuary van in the front yard of the home, into which victims were being transported on stretchers. People in the area were concerned.
