ECOWAS to meet again over Guinea as Junta holds more ‘transition’ talks

[post_slider]

ECOWAS, the West African bloc confirmed that it will meet earlier on Thursday to look into Guinea matters again. This is after their President got thrown away earlier September. Ghana’s foreign minister announced the scheduled meeting yesterday.

The national army forces are currently the leaders of the nation. The officials had a small talk on Wednesday with the civil society of Guinea. They have also met with the other national political leaders and the minor politicians.

Last week, the ECOWAS suspended the Guinea membership meeting. This was few days after President Alpha Conde, a 83-year-old man was withdrawn from leadership. It’s the armed forces from the security category that imposed the act. They said his leadership had much violation of power. Even some civil servants talked about the negative acts.

The western bloc sent a group of 15 delegates to Conakry. They went to meet the former French Foreign minister, Lieutenant Colonel Mamady. They also visited the Conde and called upon the leaders to foster the civil transition.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey , the Ghana Foreign Minister in Guinea said that the review will look upon the Guinea matter. They will try to find a possible solution to fix Guinea somewhere. But this is only possible if they have made changes to the constitution as demanded earlier. Countries like Ivory Coast have to change some part of their constitution in order to avoid being left out of the organization.

Botchwey promised that the meeting has only a single agenda. They will lay all their thoughts to find something positive for the nation. After which, she will take the report back to the government of Guinea.

She added that Guinea until now they had not reached an agreement on democratic rule. Despite the coup leaders discussing the issue in several meetings, they are yet to decide on the way forward. The heads of state from various nations will have to come in and make decisions. They will alert the nation on what results they want to get within a year, six months, or even a single month. There must be a specific time allocation period to see if the nation will fall under the correct leadership again.

Conde had authoritarianism of which the nation came to realize after his two full terms on leadership. His opposition got arrested even if they did not indulge in any bad activity. A dispute over the last election made hundreds of opposition stay in jail until when he was overthrown.

Similar countries that ever experienced army uprising was Mali. In the end, they were sanctioned as members of ECOWAS. After the country came to good leadership decision, the bloc lifted them back. Mali suffered for almost one year without a clear and defined national state leader.

ECOWAS has known to be a body that helps western nations achieve their economic and political goals.  In addition, the bloc ensures that trade within the regions gets done at a low tax rate. Guinea citizens are very impatient about the today’s decision.
