Congo Girls Embrace Martial Arts for Self-Protection and Empowerment

The introduction of hapkido to the Congo has sparked significant interest among teenage girls, drawing them to train at a center in Pointe-Noire. Trainer Armel Matanzala highlighted the appeal of hapkido, noting that while there are various martial arts in the country, hapkido stands out and captures the attention of those who witness its practice.

For the group of young girls training at the Centre de Référence, the decision to learn hapkido is driven by concerns about safety, particularly amidst the emergence of criminal gangs known as “black babies.” These gangs perpetrate heinous crimes, including rape and murder, making girls vulnerable targets.

Learner Séphora Zefo emphasized the importance of self-defense in the face of increasing threats, stating that hapkido provides her with essential skills to protect herself. Another student, Sophia Kangou, shared her personal experience of harassment and how hapkido empowered her to respond effectively. She recounted an incident at a bus stop where she successfully defended herself against an aggressive man, demonstrating the practical benefits of her hapkido training.

The self-defense techniques learned in hapkido have equipped these girls with the confidence and ability to confront potential threats. As Kangou affirmed, anyone who attempts to cause trouble for them will encounter formidable resistance, ensuring their safety and security in challenging situations.
