China’s Impact: President Bio Commends Ongoing Infrastructure Support in Sierra Leon
President Julius Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone expressed gratitude for China’s ongoing support in infrastructure development during his state visit to China. In an interview conducted during his visit, President Bio hailed the long-standing diplomatic relations between China and Sierra Leone, emphasizing the positive impact of China’s assistance in various projects.
During his visit, President Bio acknowledged the significance of the Second Juba Bridge, a notable example of China-Sierra Leone cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The 81.8-meter bridge, located in the western part of Freetown, has not only alleviated traffic congestion but has also played a crucial role in improving the daily lives of residents.
President Bio particularly highlighted the bridge’s importance during the rainy seasons, emphasizing how it ensures the safety of people, especially women and children. Without such infrastructure, accessing essential facilities like schools and health centers becomes challenging, leading to accidents and other hazards.
In addition to the Second Juba Bridge, President Bio acknowledged several other China-aided projects that stand as symbols of the enduring friendship between the two nations. The Youyi Building, constructed in the 1970s and aided by China, still serves as Sierra Leone’s government office, embodying the concept of friendship (“Youyi” in Chinese) between the two countries.
The ongoing renovation of the Sierra Leone National Stadium, funded by China, is another project expected to enhance the country’s infrastructure. Set to be completed by November, the stadium reflects China’s commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s development.
The China-Sierra Leone Friendship Road, connecting the villages of Regent and Kossoh in southeastern Freetown, serves as a vital artery for local communities near the capital city. Additionally, the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital, supported by China, stands out as one of the best comprehensive hospitals in the country. The hospital has played a crucial role in responding to health emergencies, including the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic, with Chinese medical teams collaborating with local counterparts to address these challenges.
President Bio expressed his commendation for China’s support in various infrastructure projects, emphasizing their immense importance to Sierra Leone’s development. The collaborative efforts between the two nations continue to strengthen bilateral ties and contribute to the well-being of the Sierra Leonean people.
