According to a Facebook post, Tunisian police arrested Ezzedine Hazgui on Thursday for criticizing President Kais Saied’s regime. After searching his home, Hazgui was released.
While Jawher Ben Mbark, another notable dissident was encircled by police on Wednesday but he is still missing. His father is well-known dissident Hazgui.
Furthermore, Saied’s opponents which includes opposition politicians, activists, demonstration organizers, journalists, a powerful governing body, and two judges, were attacked this month.
This month’s attack targeted these people.
The arrests have alarmed the US, and human rights groups have encouraged Saied to follow their advice.
The President dissolved Parliament and became chief executive in 2021. He established a new constitution in the same year he seized power by rigging a vote.
The major political parties in the parliament he dissolved accuse him of orchestrating a coup that overthrew the democracy created during the 2011 Tunisian revolution, launching the Arab Spring.
However, Saied termed his opponents traitors and criminals, stating his actions were legal and necessary to protect Tunisia from anarchy.
