Meta Oversight Board Reviews AI-Created Celebrity Porn Response
Meta Platforms’ Oversight Board has announced its review of the company’s response to two sexually explicit AI-generated images circulating on Facebook and Instagram. This independent body, funded by Meta but operating autonomously, aims to evaluate Meta’s policies and enforcement practices regarding pornographic deepfakes created using artificial intelligence.
While the board provided descriptions of the images under review, it refrained from disclosing the identities of the celebrity women depicted, citing concerns about preventing further harm. The proliferation of AI-generated content, including fabricated images and videos, has raised significant challenges in distinguishing between real and fake media, particularly in cases involving sexual exploitation, primarily targeting women and girls.
Earlier this year, a notable incident involving Elon Musk’s social media platform X underscored the difficulties in managing the spread of fake explicit content. X briefly restricted users from searching for images of pop star Taylor Swift after struggling to contain the dissemination of AI-generated explicit images of her.
Calls for legislative action to address the creation and dissemination of harmful deepfakes have emerged within the industry. Some executives advocate for laws criminalizing the production of such content and requiring tech companies to take proactive measures to prevent its circulation.
According to the Oversight Board’s descriptions, one case involves an AI-generated nude image resembling a public figure from India, shared on an Instagram account exclusively featuring AI-generated images of Indian women. The other image, posted in a Facebook group dedicated to sharing AI creations, depicts a nude woman resembling an American public figure, with a man groping her breast.
Meta initially removed the image featuring the American woman for violating its policies against bullying and harassment, which prohibit derogatory sexualized content. However, the image depicting the Indian woman remained accessible until the Oversight Board selected it for review, prompting Meta to reverse its decision.
In response to the cases under review, Meta has committed to implementing the Oversight Board’s decisions, underscoring its willingness to address concerns regarding the circulation of harmful deepfake content on its platforms.
