Mozambique Mourns: Ferry Disaster Leaves Over 90 Dead

Tragedy struck off the north coast of Mozambique as more than 90 individuals lost their lives in a ferry disaster, according to local authorities. Only five individuals have been rescued thus far out of an estimated 130 passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel. The passengers were reportedly fleeing from a cholera outbreak, which has plagued Nampula province, leaving a devastating toll in its wake, particularly among children.

Nampula Secretary of State, Jaime Neto, attributed the sinking to overcrowding and the vessel’s inadequacy for passenger transport. The dire circumstances led to the vessel’s tragic demise, further exacerbated by the perilous journey undertaken.

Disturbing footage circulating on social media purportedly depicts numerous lifeless bodies strewn across a beach, a grim testament to the severity of the incident. The ferry was en route from Lunga to Mozambique Island, situated off the coast of Nampula, as reported by Portuguese broadcaster RTP.

Nampula province has been grappling with a cholera epidemic, part of a larger outbreak that has afflicted several nations in southern Africa since January of the previous year. Unicef has deemed this outbreak the most severe in a quarter-century, with Mozambique alone reporting 13,700 confirmed cases and 30 fatalities since October 2023.

Adding to the region’s woes, a persistent Islamist insurgency in neighboring Cabo Delgado province has resulted in significant loss of life, claiming the lives of at least 4,000 individuals and displacing close to one million others over the course of the past six years.

Against this backdrop of tragedy and turmoil, Mozambique Island stands as a poignant symbol of the country’s complex history. For nearly four centuries, it served as the capital of Portuguese East Africa during the colonial era. Today, the island is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its colonial architecture and storied past as a pivotal trading hub. Yet, even amidst its historical significance, the island bears witness to the contemporary challenges facing Mozambique and its people.
