According to the Somali government, military operations against the al-Shabab extremist group have reduced the frequency of terrorist attacks throughout the country by 70%.
The Somali cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre, said Thursday that the government’s efforts to keep Mogadishu quiet had paid off, allowing locals to observe Ramadan without incident.
The army has reclaimed at least 80 villages and towns in south-central Somalia since the campaign began last year, according to the cabinet.
Since August 2022, government soldiers have led an offensive against al-Shabab, aided by clan militias.
Before the operation, militants increased their attacks, mainly in Mogadishu and against army sites, killing hundreds of government officials, civilians, and military personnel.
