Authorities report that 44 persons were killed overnight Thursday in two distinct attacks. The attacks tools place in northern Burkina Faso by anonymous assailants.

Kourakou and Tondobi are located in the Sahel region of the West African nation. The towns have been afflicted by al Qaeda and Islamic State-affiliated Islamist organizations for years.

The identity of the perpetrators of Thursday’s assaults is currently unknown. Officials stated on Saturday that “armed terrorist organizations” were to blame.

Violence in Burkina Faso, one of the world’s poorest countries, has resulted in the displacement of over 2 million people and the killings of thousands.

In response to the unrest, the military has launched two coups in the past year. However, despite their assurances to restore order, they have been unable to halt the violence.

In 2012, Islamists assumed control of a Tuareg separatist revolt in Mali, making it the first nation in the region to experience unrest. Since then, the violence has spread to Burkina Faso and Niger, threatening the stability of all nations along the coast.
