The opposition leaders in Somalia have arrived at a peaceable decision of halting their protests. This is after last week`s clashes that resulted in the death of innocent civilians. The clashes involving the military troops and the supporters of the opposition emanated from gunfire. An event that resulted in three casualties from the clashes. The official commencement of the launch of the protests was on Friday. However, plans will have to change following the preceding clashes. The government did not oppose the move for the protests provided; it would not disturb Somalia’s peace.
Events of last week clashes
The political state in Somalia is in disarray today. This is after the planned February 8th elections did not happen. Hence, allowing the incumbent president to continue with his state roles. However, opposition leaders strongly oppose President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s continuing leadership, popularly known as Farmajo.
The failed negotiations to arrive at a new date for elections have stirred up wrangles from the opposition. According to the opposition leaders, they perceive this as a move from the president and his supporters to delay the elections. Hence the clashes. The attacks and clashes were fueled by a statement that Farmajo ordered previous attacks on the citizens. Somali experienced an attack a few weeks ago that resulted in a number of casualties.
Post poning Friday protests for Somalia
One of the opposition leaders, Abdirahman Abdishakur, affirms the postponement of the protests. He further urges the opposition supporters to agree with the decision to enhance peaceful demonstrations. Additionally, he confirms that the protests are still in the plan. They will happen.
Both the opposition and the government are still playing a blame game on each other over the chaos. Moreover, government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu responds to the February 19th allegations. He conveys his condolences to the victims of the attacks. Moreover, an independent committee is underway to bring to light the events of that day.
