Yemi Alade Raises Concerns: Opposes Lagos House Demolition
Popular singer Yemi Alade has criticized the Lagos State Government following the recent demolition of several houses in Maryland. Expressing her dismay, the ‘Johnny’ crooner argued that the government’s actions are exacerbating the plight of citizens by rendering them homeless overnight.
Alade also lamented the adverse impact of the ongoing demolitions on the real estate sector, asserting that they are driving away potential investors and contributing to a negative perception of the state’s development.
In a heartfelt video message shared via her Instagram account, Yemi Alade questioned the rationale behind the government’s actions. “Lagos State, what’s going on?” she exclaimed. “Does it make sense that people will invest millions of naira and dollars into real estate; buy houses and lands and the state government will demolish the place and render people homeless overnight?”
“This thing is happening repeatedly. Right now, Maryland, Mende area is on fire. People are sleeping in their houses, waking up the next day, homeless,” she added, expressing her frustration at the recurring cycle of demolitions.
Alade emphasized the broader repercussions of such actions, highlighting the erosion of trust and hope among citizens. “You’re ruining the real estate value of the state and country, making people lose trust not only just in the idea of Nigeria but lose hope entirely in the little coins they saved to make their lives worthwhile,” she lamented. “How is this okay? Why why?”
Meanwhile, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources for Lagos State, clarified the ongoing demolition of houses in Mende, Maryland, and other areas of the state. Wahab clarified that the houses currently undergoing demolition were constructed on drainage channels.
In his statement shared via social media, Wahab explained the government’s position regarding the matter, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring proper drainage infrastructure to prevent flooding and other environmental hazards. He detailed the engagement process with stakeholders and the measures taken to address the encroachment on drainage channels.
While the government asserts its commitment to enforcing regulations and maintaining infrastructure integrity, Alade’s impassioned plea reflects the concerns of many citizens grappling with the consequences of such demolitions on their livelihoods and communities.
