Two babies were spotted on Lake Kivu’s shores and transported to safety only days after devastating floods in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

They were found floating in the lake, perched on the wreckage of their houses, according to locals.

They were rescued from death. Delphin Birimbi, community head of the Kalehe area, “It is a miracle, we were all amazed.”

He went on to say that the babies’ parents had been slain in the flooding. Furthermore, “We are in touch with people who can help us raise them,” he said.

They were rescued on Monday in two distinct sites, one in Bushushu and the other in Nyamukubi, two of Kalehe’s most damaged areas.

Mr. Birimbi estimates that 5,255 people are still missing. Search and rescue efforts are now ongoing. It is believed that 400 people died as a result of the floods last week.

According to locals, at least 1,300 dwellings were damaged or destroyed, as well as multiple schools, hospitals, churches, and other community facilities, as well as a considerable quantity of water infrastructure.
