Tunisia begins Damascus ambassador appointment.

The President of Tunisia, Kais Saied announced on Monday that he has instructed his foreign minister to begin the process of assigning a new ambassador to the capital of Syria, Damascus. This is the latest Arab effort to end Syria’s regional isolation.

Assad’s brutal attack on pro-democracy protestors sparked a civil war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. Many more were forced to flee from their homes. This forced the Tunisian government to suspend diplomatic relations with Syria.

Following Saied’s alleged July 2021 coup, in which he took almost all government, Tunisia has indicated its readiness to reassess its Syria policy.

To better monitor almost 3,000 Tunisian terrorists fighting in Syria, Tunisia restored a diplomatic presence with limited access in 2017.
