Tigo Tanzania Extends Mobile Money Service Across Africa

Tigo Tanzania extends its Mobile Money platform across Africa, especially in East Africa. Tigo Tanzania users can now send and receive money efficiently and effectively with M-Pesa in Kenya. They can also send and receive money from Airtel Money in Rwanda through mobile phones, MTN MoMo in Uganda, and more. This will enable families to transfer money to relatives and small businesses continue their operations.

“This innovation between four countries will bond Tigo to its customers’ needs with digital solutions. And it also means that the outcome of mobile money can be moved to cross-border trade. This will allow businesses and families to send money efficiently and securely in East Africa,” says Tigo Tanzania’s Acting Chief Officer, Angelica Pesha.

About the service

MTN Uganda has been responsible for starting financial platforms and delivering a range of financial services like loans, micro-savings, insurance, and merchant payments through MoMoPay.

“To deliver our wide network to customers across the East African region…is good news to our effort to extend reliable, affordable, secure financial services. This is not to only our subscribers in Uganda but to all people around there,” says Stephen Mutana, the General Manager of MTN Uganda.

“As Mobile Money is becoming important and unique, our partnership with Tigo Tanzania will also help us deliver to our subscribers within the East African Community. There is also an option to send funds to their families and friends, and business partners using the Airtel Money Wallets,” says The Head of Airtel Money at Airtel Rwanda, Jidia Gasana.

What is Mobile Money

Mobile money is a nice innovation; it helps consumers to pay their goods on time instead of paying with cheque, cash, or credit cards. Consumers can use mobile money to acquire digital or physical goods and a wide range of services. Mobile money helps to increase accessibility in rural areas; people living in rural areas won’t have to depend so much on the bank transfer.

It allows cashless payments which help to reduce consumers’ dependency on cash, it also delivers easy tracking of transaction records. Mobile money also reduces the risks of holding cash and increasing financial security. Since its inception, its services have started to become necessary in Africa.
