Teraco to build the Second-Largest Data Facility in Africa, this was announced recently. Teraco has decided to build a new 30MW data center after a 60MW expansion in Johannesburg, South Africa. This new data center will be located in Cape Town – Teraco Cape Town 2 (CT2). The facility will be the second largest in the continent following the Johannesburg data center.
The Chief Executive Officer at Teraco, Jan Hnizdo, stated that the growth of cloud in the region has increased demand for cloud services. Sub-sea cable operators, enterprises, and more seeking to find a data center infrastructure to store data will find it easy and efficient to do so. The construction on site will start early March 2020 and would continue till the pandemic lockdown is over.
Plans
Teraco targets completion of the project before the Q3 of 2021. The facility will comprise of 8 data halls with a site area of 8,000sqm of usable floor space. It doubles the existing data center in Rondebosch Cape town, launched by Teraco eleven years ago.
“This new investment in the Mother City is special for us. To date, the (CT1) building has gone through four expansions since launching; the building currently has enough capacity until the new site is delivered to the market,” said Hnizdo.
It is said that there will be direct interconnection availability to cloud services like AWS Direct Connect, Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute, and more. The company’s market demand is rising because of the enterprise market. Teraco is a vendor, cloud, and carrier data center provider. It was founded in 2008, the company gains significant market size when it created an opportunity for a neutral data center. The company started its operation in South Africa and has grown significantly within the country.
