Tanzania Floods Leave Nearly 60 Dead Over Two-Week Period

Tanzania has been grappling with severe rains and flooding since the beginning of April, resulting in nearly 60 fatalities across the country, as announced by the government. The coastal region has borne the brunt of the devastation, with floods causing extensive damage to thousands of farms, according to Mobhare Matinyi, the government spokesperson.

Mr. Matinyi highlighted the gravity of the situation, noting that the coast region alone has reported 11 fatalities due to the flooding. Overall, the toll stands at 58 deaths nationwide as a result of the deluge.

Tragically, the impact of the flooding was underscored by a recent incident in which eight schoolchildren lost their lives after their bus veered into a flooded gorge in the northern part of the country.

April typically marks the peak of Tanzania’s rainy season, but this year has witnessed unprecedented rainfall. As noted by weather experts, the adverse weather conditions have been further exacerbated by the El Niño weather phenomenon, which intensifies the seasonal rains.

The repercussions of the heavy rains have extended beyond Tanzania’s borders, with neighboring Kenya also experiencing significant casualties and displacement. At least 13 fatalities have been reported in Kenya, with approximately 15,000 individuals displaced, according to the United Nations.

As communities grapple with the aftermath of the flooding, concerted efforts are underway to mitigate the impact and assist those affected. However, the situation remains challenging, with the ongoing rains posing continued threats to lives and livelihoods in the region.
