Wilson Sabiiti killed retired Colonel Charles Okello Engola, Deputy Minister for Gender and Labor, in his Kampala home on Tuesday.

Following that, the soldier shot himself in the head.

At this moment, it is unknown whether or not the two men got into a fight. Sabiiti joined the minister’s security squad a month ago.

Some residents claimed to have seen Sabiiti walking around and firing shots into the air before committing suicide.

The minister’s aide, Ronald Otim, was injured in the exchange of gunfire inside the house. He is now being treated at Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

According to early accounts, a number more people may have been injured, and a video released on social media showed astonished neighbors gathered at the scene.

Colonel Engola was a significant player in the government; he had previously served as the deputy defense minister.

The speaker of Uganda’s parliament delivered a short remark announcing Col. Engola’s death during the morning session.

This morning, I received the awful news that Hon. Engola had been shot by his security and subsequently committed suicide. God has mercy on his soul. That was indeed God’s will. On Tuesday, Anita Among told legislators, “We can’t change anything.”
