Senegal Welcomes Newly Appointed Government, Declares PM Sonko

On April 5, Senegal announced its newly formed government, comprising 25 ministers and five junior ministers, as disclosed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. This development followed the resounding victory of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the March elections. Faye, 44, took office on Tuesday, succeeding outgoing President Macky Sall, whose twelve-year tenure was marked by growing public dissatisfaction.

The cabinet’s composition, greenlit by President Faye, bears significant scrutiny, given his bold campaign promises, including the abandonment of the CFA franc, the West African common currency. While Faye has moderated his stance on this issue, he pledged this week to conduct an audit of the country’s oil, gas, and mining sectors, signaling potential shifts in economic policy.

Notable appointments within the cabinet include Cheikh Diba, assuming the role of finance minister. Diba, formerly the director of budget programming at the finance ministry, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Abdourahmane Sarr has been entrusted with the crucial portfolio of economy minister.

In the realm of energy, Birame Souleye Diop, who previously served as vice president of the now-disbanded Pastef party, has been tasked with leading the oil and energy ministry. His appointment suggests a continuation of Faye and Sonko’s political agenda within the energy sector.

Furthermore, the cabinet includes two high-ranking military officials appointed as interior and defense ministers, underscoring the government’s emphasis on security matters in a region grappling with various challenges.

The formation of this government marks a significant juncture in Senegalese politics, with expectations high for President Faye and his team to address pressing issues such as economic reform, resource management, and national security. As the nation embarks on this new chapter under Faye’s leadership, all eyes will be on the actions and policies of the newly appointed ministers, shaping the trajectory of Senegal’s future.
