An internal memo seen by Reuters on Tuesday showed Safaricom (SCOM.NR) had hired Wim Vanhelleputte as Ethiopia CEO, effective September.

Vanhelleputte, who comes from South Africa’s MTN Group, will replace Anwar Soussa, who will leave his office at the end of the month.

The Belgian will oversee the company’s ambitious expansion goals in the massive market where it began operations last year.

After receiving a financial license in May, Safaricom will launch M-Pesa financial services in the coming months.

CEO Peter Ndegwa signed Vanhelleputte’s appointment memo.
