Resolution Achieved: Dismissed Twitter Staff in Ghana Receive Long-Awaited Compensation

X, formerly known as Twitter, has settled with the staff who were terminated from the company’s African headquarters in Accra, Ghana. Agency Seven Seven, the legal representative for the affected staff, announced on Sunday that it had successfully negotiated a fair settlement and repatriation expenses for the former employees of Twitter Ghana Ltd.

The mass layoffs occurred in November 2022 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform in October of the same year. Musk’s decision to reduce the workforce by half led to the termination of the Ghanaian staff. Threatened with legal action for unpaid redundancy payments, the former employees, who received less than a month’s notice before their dismissal, sought fair compensation as required by Ghanaian employment law.

According to Agency Seven Seven, Ghana’s Labour and Employment Law mandates the payment of redundancy following negotiations with affected employees. The successful resolution of this matter underscores the importance of such regulations in mitigating the challenges faced by employees during mass redundancy exercises.

Many of the terminated staff had relocated from neighboring countries and had only been in their positions for a few months. The battle for compensation reportedly took a toll on their mental health and financial well-being.

Elon Musk’s decision to downsize the global workforce resulted in 6,000 people losing their jobs. The rationale behind the workforce reduction was cited as a cost-cutting measure, reflecting the challenges and changes that often accompany major acquisitions in the tech industry.
