Rescue centre in South Africa saves thousands of abandoned pugs

Tucked away in the suburbs of Johannesburg, Pug Rescue South Africa is rewriting the story of rescue and rehabilitation for one of the world’s most beloved dog breeds: pugs. Since its inception in 2008 by the compassionate Cheryl Gaw, this sanctuary has become a beacon of hope, providing safety and care to over 2,500 pugs in need. Today, the organization supports more than 200 dogs at its Johannesburg facility and foster homes, including one in Cape Town. With a mission fueled by love and resilience, Pug Rescue South Africa.

Cheryl Gaw’s passion for these charming, expressive dogs drives the tireless efforts of Pug Rescue South Africa. Whether the animals are victims of financial hardship, neglect, or abandonment, the organization steps in to offer a second chance. “Pugs are unique companions, but they require special care. We’re here to ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve,” says Cheryl.

Cheryl’s efforts are supported by Mduduzi Nkonzo, the organization’s Director and Senior Caregiver, who has devoted 11 years to the cause. Affectionately known as “The Pug Whisperer,” Mduduzi is known for his remarkable ability to recall the name of every pug entrusted to their care. To him, this is more than work; it’s a calling. “These dogs have so much love to give. It’s our duty to ensure their lives are as happy and healthy as possible,” Mduduzi explains.

Despite their adorable features and heartwarming personalities, pugs often face significant health challenges due to their breeding. Conditions like breathing difficulties, eye infections, ear issues, and even leg paralysis are common, making veterinary care a top priority for Pug Rescue South Africa.

Providing meaningful, comprehensive care is no small commitment, and the organization faces mounting financial pressures. Yearly veterinary costs soar to a staggering $38,000, a burden shouldered entirely through donations and fundraising. To meet these demands, the centre has established its own veterinary clinic, ensuring that its residents receive everything from critical surgeries to basic preventative care.

The sanctuary is thoughtfully designed to accommodate its furry residents’ varying needs. Playful young pugs delight in designated play areas, while senior dogs relax in a tranquil retirement section complete with 27 insulated kennels and cottages. Such attention to detail ensures each animal receives specialized care and comfort during their stay.

The organization’s impact reaches beyond its gates. Through its “Thanda Inja” (Love the Dog) program, Pug Rescue South Africa expands its compassion into local communities. This initiative provides **free sterilization services, medical support, and other caregiving essentials to help animals in underserved neighborhoods. By promoting a culture of kindness and responsibility, the program uplifts not only dogs but also the communities around them.

Running a facility that transforms lives requires more than dedication; it demands collective support. Thankfully, Pug Rescue South Africa has cultivated a global community of donors and adopters who help sustain its operations. From small contributions to adoption fees, every act of generosity helps fund the critical veterinary care, nourishing meals, and cozy environments these pugs deserve.

The organization also actively leverages social media platforms to share poignant rescue stories and updates, keeping its supporters connected with the lives they’re helping to change. “Every donation makes a difference,” Cheryl says. “Every single pug that comes through our doors gets a second chance at love and life.”

For those looking to help, the options are plentiful. Whether donating, volunteering, or adopting, contributors play an essential role in the ongoing success of the rescue.
