Peter Obi Slams Alleged ‘Deportation’ of Osun Indigenes from Lagos as Rights Infringement

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has strongly criticized the reported ‘deportation’ of Osun indigenes from Lagos State. Recent reports have circulated suggesting that the Lagos State Government initiated the expulsion of Osun natives from the state, with police officers allegedly rounding them up from various areas, including Ajah, TBS, and Lagos Island.

Expressing his dismay over this development, Obi denounced the alleged ‘deportation’ as a blatant violation of citizens’ rights. He condemned the action through a statement shared on his verified social media handle, emphasizing its adverse implications for national unity and cohesion.

Obi expressed, “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the recent reports of the deportation of citizens, mostly of Osun State origin, by Lagos State authorities. This is not merely a concern for Osun State but all Nigerians who uphold the principles of unity, fairness, and justice.”

The former Governor further underscored his opposition to any form of discrimination or injustice, asserting the fundamental right of every Nigerian to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their state of origin or place of residence. He reiterated the importance of upholding unity, fairness, and justice, as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

Obi’s stance reflects a broader call for inclusivity and adherence to constitutional provisions safeguarding the rights of all citizens to reside and seek livelihoods in any part of the federation. His outspoken condemnation of the reported ‘deportation’ underscores the imperative of upholding fundamental human rights and fostering a society built on principles of equality and justice for all Nigerians.
