Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari nominated Abdulrasheed Bawa for the Anti-corruption chief position. On Wednesday, the country`s senate took a vote to approve the Presidents nomination. Bawa will now serve as the regional head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The EFCC is a commission that can investigate and prosecute Africa`s largest oil exporter and its huge economy. Bawa expresses his joy for his new top position. He states that his position at the EFFC, for the past 16 years, has been grooming him for this new high-ranking position.
Functions of an Anti-corruption chief in Nigeria
The EFCC majorly focuses on issues surrounding finances and crimes such as money laundering. In fact, Bawa will oversee the P&ID gas firm’s case, which Nigeria hopes to reverse the $10 billion arbitration. This means that Bawa will now partake in high-profile ranking cases for his country. It is the duty of the EFCC in Nigeria to ensure that all financial and economic matters take the legal route.
Bawa qualifications to the Job
Things took a different turn for the previous EFCC chief before being laid down from his position by the President. According to Buhari, Ibrahim Magu, former chief EFCC, he redirected funds from the commission to private pockets. The events took place last year.
Bawa affirms that, apart from his 16-year experience with the firm, he is well skilled to perform the task. This includes conducting investigations for fraud cases, money laundering, dealing with corruption in the public sector, and financially related crimes.
Corruption in Nigeria
Nigeria is one of the major countries in the African continent battling with the issue of corruption as South Africa looks forward to settling on the corruption cases with former president Jacob Zuma. Nigeria has taken a bold step of replacing its former chief of the EFCC over misconduct in the office. Plans for an agency to help manage the assets seized from anti-corruption investigations are underway. This will help prevent any future attempts to misuse the assets, as is with former chief Ibrahim.
