The afrobeat singer Seun Kuti, who is the son of the late musical pioneer Fela Kuti, has had his detention in Nigeria extended by an additional four days by the country’s authorities.

According to reports from the local media, it is anticipated that he will remain detained until the 22nd of May.

On Monday, he was taken into custody on suspicion of having assaulted a law enforcement officer.

Mr. Kuti decided to turn himself in at the beginning of the week despite the fact that the police chief Usman Alkali Baba had ordered his detention to take place on Saturday.

The police spokesman added that Kuti, who is 40 years old, was “captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.”

On Twitter, prior to his arrest, Kuti claimed that a police officer had attempted to kill him and his family, but he did not specify how this was accomplished.

The musician has stated in a tweet that he is willing to provide “full cooperation” to any investigation that may be conducted.
