Nigeria: Boat sinks in Niger, 100 believed dead

The event occurred early Monday on the Niger River in central Nigeria. The boat capsized early Monday morning on the Niger, killing 100 passengers.

Al Jazeera said that the boat carried wedding guests from Niger State to Kwara State in central Nigeria.

According to Abuja-based Al Jazeera correspondent Ahmed Idris, the boat capsized after hitting something.

Idris says search-and-rescue activities began Monday. Police are unsure how many passengers died or were on the overloaded boat.

Similar accidents have occurred near the junction of Africa’s longest rivers, Niger and Benue.

The Guardian reported that a boat sank in the Niger in May 2021. It killed 160 individuals.
